This is my mother¹s computer and I¹m trying to help her resolve boot issues before calling Apple Care. Sorry for the long post. iMac G5 1.8 GHz 20² Mac OS X 10.3.9 160GB HD 1 GB RAM Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse First Generation (Serial Number falls between W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx with the video and power issues) Purchased from Apple Nov 2004 with Apple Care Protection Plan No issues until yesterday My mom wanted to go on the Internet and noticed her cable modem was out. She decided to do some other things on the computer and it suddenly turned off. She tried to reboot several times with it beginning the boot process and then turning off. At one point she actually got booted and the dock showed up but then it turned off again. Yesterday I went to troubleshoot the iMac and tried the following: Tried booting, got the start up chime and it quit.
Retried and got to the dock and it quit. Reset the PRAM (Control/Option/P/R) and got the second tone and it booted but quit shortly after. Restarted and got a long tone followed by the power button flickering. (Doesn¹t that mean it¹s ok to update firmware? I can¹t find any firmware update on the Apple Web site for the iMac G5.) Tried to restart using the TechTool Pro disk that came with the Apple Care PP. No success. Restarted and held down F12 to eject TechTool Pro disk. Restarted and it booted and inserted TechTool Pro disk and changed the startup disk to TechTool Pro. Restarted and no success. Restarted again and able to eject TTPro disk. Inserted original install disk, changed start disk to original install and restarted. Success. Ran Disk Utility to Verify HD. Everything checked out ok. Then I did a verify and repair Disk Permissions and it started but then I got the following: Determining correct file permissions. Then the window which said: Disk Utility Internal error. Disk utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and re launch utility. I hit Quit and got the following window: Operations still in progress. Disk Utility has some operation in progress. Quitting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational. Are you sure you want to quit? I quit and restarted the computer. This time the computer seemed to be stable so I proceeded to back up her important data via the CD drive and a thumb drive. No problems. Did a few more organizational chores and wondered if the Norton System Works and Norton Personal Firewall were causing problems. So I used the Norton uninstaller to uninstall all Norton software and did a restart. The gray screen and Apple logo came up and the spinner below the logo. Then a lot of CD drive noise and suddenly the Apple logo turned into a pixelated rectangle. Tried to eject Norton CD with the F12 key no success. Restarted and the same thing happened but this time able to eject CD. Restarted and booted ok. Seemed to be stable so reconnected to cable modem which was working and accessed the Internet. Told my mom to leave it on and see how things went. It was on for about 4 hours and quit. So back to square one. I¹m trying to resolve this without Apple support as I converted her from Windoze to Macs and don¹t want her bashing her Mac. I¹m ordering her an external firewire drive to back up her applications before erasing the HD completely. TIA for any suggestions. Kt -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
