This is my mother=B9s computer and I=B9m trying to help her resolve
boot issues
before calling Apple Care. Sorry for the long post.
Next time, PLEASE turn off the RTF or HTML formatting. I almost
didn't read your post because of it.
I'm a tech in a Mac repair shop. We see the sorts of things you
describe every day. The problem you're having is that you are having
several issues all happening at once.
The power issues are almost certainly being caused by faulty power
supply or logic board. You have AppleCare and a backup of your data
-- get the machine in for servicing asap.
Determining correct file permissions. Then the window which said:
=20
Disk Utility Internal error. Disk utility has lost its connection
with the
Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and re launch
utility=
This is unrelated to the problems above -- iTunes 6.0.2 can cause
this message. Check MacFixit.com for the workaround for this, it's
pretty easy to resolve (just annoying).
Did a few
more organizational chores and wondered if the Norton System Works and
Norton Personal Firewall were causing problems. So I used the Norton
uninstaller to uninstall all Norton software and did a restart.
Good man! Now go back (if possible) and do a find to remove ALL
TRACES of *any* file with the word "norton" or "symantec" in it --
Norton's uninstaller doesn't do the whole job. Now remember -- NEVER
INSTALL A SYMANTEC PRODUCT ON YOUR MAC EVER AGAIN. Can't stress this
enough.
I=B9m trying to resolve this without Apple support as I converted
her from
Windoze to Macs and don=B9t want her bashing her Mac.
You'd be a LOT better off saying "Mom, Apple found a defect in this
model and they will fix it for free, so let's back up your data and
send it off for a few days so we don't have to deal with this any more."
I=B9m ordering her an external firewire drive to back up her
applications
before erasing the HD completely.
Erasing the HD will most likely accomplish NOTHING. Don't waste your
time -- get the machine FIXED so that this isn't an ongoing ordeal
(which is causing more distrust than just fixing it, trust me on this).
Cheers
Chas
