Thanks for the tip.. I just redid my OS 9 drive with a Universal

Hi,
Not sure if this is relevant, but here goes ...
The 233 Mhz iMac is unique in that I believe when you are
reformatting a hard drive for it you must create a boot partition
that is (a) no larger than 8 Gigabytes and (b) is located at the
beginning of the hard drive. Whatever space is left on the hard drive
after that you can manipulate any way you like, either as a single
2nd partition comprising all of the remaining hard drive space or in
any other configuration, but you will not be able to make them
bootable partitions.
I don't think this issue ever arose on units that came directly from
the factory, because Apple never put internal hard drives larger than
8 Gigabytes into the 233 Mhz iMac.
Now, I have to admit that my recollection is foggy here, but perhaps
this issue only arises when you get to the point that you are
installing OS X onto one of these machines. If so, then all this may
not be relevant to your situation if you are running OS 9 and only OS
9 on your drive.
I just remember that, in the last few years that I used my original
Bondi Blue 233 Mhz iMac, I had to squeeze BOTH OS 9 and OS X onto
that initial partition that could be no larger than 8 Gigabytes, and
that this then required quite a bit of routine housekeeping to ensure
that I did not run out of free space on that partition.
So this WOULD be consistent with a situation where you take a hard
drive larger than 8 Gigs, pop it into another Mac like a G4, reformat
it as a single partition, install OS's and applications on it and
generally have it running just fine on the G4, but when you put it
back into the 233 iMac, it fails to boot that computer.
You should be able to find more on this on the Apple Support site,
perhaps by searching using keywords like "233 iMac hard drive
partition".
Good luck!
