First off it's possible it had nothing to do with what your friend did but it was simply the process of rebooting which brought out a problem that may have been there from any point since your last reboot.
One issue that is fairly rare is the disk driver becoming corrupt. I have seen it a couple of times under OS 9 or earlier but not with X. In 9 and earlier you could boot from the installer CD and run Drive Setup then select "Update Driver" or such. I'm not certain this can be done in X though.
