Feature 3 - Challenge/Response secured email at the user/domain/server level
Unfortunately, this one likely won't appear any time soon. Someone is claiming a patent on this one, which is one major obstacle. Second, it requires quite a bit of work to implement effectively. Third, it's a very bad feature for many reasons:
[1] Spammers are now sending out confirmation requests, making people leery about responding.
[2] SpamArrest, one of the originators of C/R, harvests the addresses of people who send mail to their customers, and spams them (and apparently sells the lists of addresses to other spammers).
[3] When spam is sent, this doesn't reduce spam, but instead reflects it on to someone else (the poor person whose E-mail address the spammer is using).
[4] The user will not get most E-mail sent from web sites (order confirmations, for example), or mail from mailing lists.
[5] Most C/R programs are seriously broken, and end up spamming unintentionally.
There are other reasons, too, but those are some of the more common ones why C/R is not a good idea.
