I have had a few similar problems with mailboxes. Usually there is a .tmp file that is locked by a process in that users directory. It is a text file that appear to be something left over from attachments. The file name usually is "UT~" and the username ".tmp" and the text is the name of an attachment. If you stop the Imail services and remove the file from the directory it fixes it. This may not be related to your problem, but it causes similar symptoms.
