I don't know what kind of market research they've done...

It's very clear.

Their marketing department did research for a specific target market. That target market is very different than their current market for IMail (but probably is closer to the market for Ipswitch Instant Messaging or IMail AntiVirus). That target market probably said that they would prefer a low(to them)-cost solution incorporating mail/IM/AV/collaboration over paying for separate pieces. That target market does not consist of the ISPs, colleges, and small businesses that IMail targets today. It consists of small-to-medium businesses (just under the radar of Exchange).

With that marketing done, Ipswitch decided it would be better to do ICS and not sell IMail as an addon.

Yes, it is normally insane for a business to throw out 90% of their loyal customers. The only thing that I can imagine is that IMail isn't being handled well, and is losing money for Ipswitch (otherwise, why throw out money?).
