Thanks Mr. X, it's looking better to me as time progresses and I may just go
for it and take the time to learn it! I was working on a control panel
solution for Windows until now, and from what I hear there are tons of them
for NIX many which are free. NIX could potentially solve a lot of issues if
I could ever feel confident about not being rooted by the bad guys.

Yes, run *BSD.  I don't know why anyone would run linux unless the 
application they are running specifically requires it.  Sad thing is 
*BSD runs some linux apps better than linux itself does.
