Actually I would prefer the security of Java over ActiveX (and flash)
anyday.
Flash (though probably never open source) is required. Though 90% of
sites just use it for annoying ads or intro screens :(


Generally off -topic:
Granted about ActiveX (don't use that either by virtue of my using Firefox).
On the Flash front, check out the Flashblock firefox extension. It blocks
flash and just displays a small image and I can run the flash by clicking
the icon.
