Whistle While You Drive: Preventing Ambulance and Deer Collisions
Vehicle collisions with deer are an increasing problem. It has been estimated that there are about 1 million deer-related vehicle accidents in the U.S. each year. The consequences of such accidents multiply when ambulance patients are added to the equation. What can be done to prevent these accidents from occurring? Here's how one ambulance service is addressing the problem.
New Orleans EMT Recalls Storm, Looks for Improved Readiness
A New Orleans area EMT spoke with Merginet recently about life after Hurricane Katrina. Things are far from being back to normal in her hometown. And with only a few months to go until the hurricane season, she worries about the city's emergency preparedness. A brush with another violent hurricane could be catastrophic.
Is CPR Performed on a Moving Ambulance Stretcher Effective?
Are we transporting too many dead people? There is little an emergency physician can do for a medical cardiac arrest in a hospital that a paramedic cannot do in the field. Yet, many paramedics continue to provide CPR in a moving ambulance or moving stretcher to a patient who has no chance of resuscitation. It's a practice that needs to end.
Making Medical Helicopters Safer
Medical helicopters are an important part of the EMS system. However, there are too many and they are significantly overutilized. Additional research is underway to better identify those patients who will benefit from helicopter transport. Hopefully, the medical helicopter industry will continue their efforts to increase safety-possibly even stopping all flight operations at night.
Scents for Tired, Frazzled Souls
Imagine using the scent of peppermint or cinnamon to keep you awake on a long night shift. A recent study has found that the odors of peppermint and cinnamon enhance motivation, performance and alertness, decrease fatigue, and serve as central nervous system stimulants. The author, who is a medic, recently patented a commercially available inhaler containing 100 percent pure pharmaceutical grade peppermint to help keep drivers alert and minimize fatigue.
Emergency Department Diversions of Ambulances Apparently Increasing
Finding a solution to the ambulance diversion problem is becoming a priority in hospitals across the country. About one ambulance in the U.S. is diverted every minute from its originally intended emergency department because it was overcrowded and could not safely care for another sick or injured patient. A recent study suggested that senior citizens are the most affected by this and that large emergency departments account for the most diverted ambulances.
Engineers Designing a Field-Ready Doppler Ultrasound Vein-Finder
An entrepreneurial paramedic and a team of engineers hope to make the lives of field workers easier with the development of an inexpensive, handheld device that uses Doppler ultrasound technology to find veins quickly. The developers believe that this device will be more reliable, more accurate, and will work faster than currently available vein-locating units using lights or heat strips.
Cell Phones and Drivers Don't Mix
Measures are being debated in state legislatures across the country on whether to ban hand-held cell phones in vehicles. Distractions while driving, such as talking on a cell phone, can cause accidents. As EMS looks at ways to prevent injuries, education about cell phone usage while driving should receive as much attention as discussion of child car seats and bicycle helmets.
