HOME Team Helps San Francisco Fight Chronic Public Inebriates Problem
The city of San Francisco is evaluating a program that pairs paramedics with social workers in an attempt to place homeless or marginally housed inebriates in treatment programs. An analysis of city records shows that 362 individuals-most of them drunk and homeless or marginally housed-have been picked up repeatedly by paramedics. These 362 people were picked up at least 3,869 times between March 2004 and August 2005, at a potential cost of $11.6 million. | |

NAEMT Foundation's EMS & Rescuer Relief Fund Plans Fund Drive to Help Providers in Hurricane Areas
"Many EMS professionals from the areas affected by this year's hurricanes are living and working amid great loss," said Jim Allen, the administrator of NAEMT's EMS & Rescuer Relief Fund. NAEMT has begun a holiday fund-raising campaign to help EMTs and paramedics in parts of the U.S. ravaged by the hurricanes. | |

Human patient simulators are becoming more sophisticated and are now an important part of modern EMS education. But, are they effective? Researchers at the University of Calgary studied the use of mannequins to teach intubation to paramedic students and concluded that students trained on a human simulator had equivalent success and complication rates when compared to students trained in the OR. | |
