Air Crews Play Important Role in Katrina Relocations, Rescues and Resupply
In the days before and after the hurricane hit, fixed-wing and rotor aircraft provided vital medical evacuations for Gulf Coast residents. Helicopters also took part in search and rescue missions, and they participated in levee repair and firefighting activities in New Orleans. Finally, helicopters also brought much-needed food, water and other supplies to communities that were otherwise cut off from outside assistance. | |

A new mobile military hospital received its first domestic field test in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina. About 90 National Guard troops from Kansas, Mississippi, Delaware and Alabama set up the hospital in two days on the grounds of Hancock Medical Center in Bay St. Louis. | |

The National EMS Research Strategic Plan
The National EMS Research Strategic Plan writing team, headed by Michael Sayre, MD, from Ohio State University, has published their recommendations for the future of EMS research. The plan priortizes clinical issues and system and medical science issues. The top priorities for clinical issues are airway ad breathing, cardiovascular disease and stroke, general medical, pediatrics, and trauma. | |

Epilepsy Foundation Offers EMS Guidance
Patients experiencing a seizure disorder may display a confusing variety of signs and symptoms, making it difficult for first responders to assess the patient's condition. Because of this, The Epilepsy Foundation is establishing a committee of medical professionals to review seizure-related protocols and develop a formal seizure recognition and management training module for first responders. | |
