Infrequent Out-of-Hospital Endotracheal Intubation May Not Maintain Proficiency
The number of out-of-hospital endotracheal intubation (ETI) procedures performed by individual rescuers is small, suggesting that rescuers may not be getting enough practice to maintain adequate skill, Pennsylvania researchers report.
Geographic Location Important when Applying Traumatic CPR Guidelines
NAEMSP and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) developed a set of guidelines, based on a review of currently available literature, to assist EMS personnel in triaging traumatic cardiopulmonary arrest patients prior to transport to the hospital. But researchers reporting in the May 2005 issue of The Journal of Trauma Injury, Infection, and Critical Care question the strict application of these guidelines.
Paramedics to Begin Testing Heart Device Next Month
Paramedics in several US cities will participate in the ResQ Trial and will begin testing experimental suction devices on heart attack victims. These clinical trials will be unusual in that patient consent will not be required prior to the devices being used.
Guide Those ALS Intercepts
Few services have clear policies and protocols for calling an ALS intercept, relying instead on the subjective determination of on-scene BLS providers. This results in a great deal of variability and subsequent inconsistency in the use of the ALS intercept.
Prehospital Recognition of Stroke: The Houston Experience
Having stroke protocols and stroke centers is important. However, in a study of Houston stroke patients, despite an 18 percent increase in diagnostic accuracy by paramedics, admission of stroke in two hours or less only increased by 4 percent. The problem with stroke intervention is that people want to compare it to cardiac intervention, which is an apples-and-oranges comparison.
Book Review: Helping Grieving People
EMS responders often find themselves encountering people at the earliest moments of a loss. And while EMS responders don't usually have the luxury of spending lengthy amounts of time with grieving people at a scene, understanding grief processes may help emergency personnel maintain a high level of compassionate care that shines through, even during limited moments of on scene communication.

EMS Fast Fact Since 2000, more than 10 percent of the helicopters serving as air ambulances have crashed, killing 60 patients on their way to U.S. hospitals. If airlines lost a similar percentage of planes, 90 passenger jets would crash every year. -USA Today
