Full-Time EMT's Turkeys Find National Acclaim
EMT-Intermediate Mike Walters loves turkeys and loves his EMS work. But his love of raising heritage turkeys came first, and it has grown into a burgeoning, nationally recognized business that was featured in the November issue of Martha Stewart Living.
Shining Moments in Russia
Seventeen American EMS professionals and four guests participated in a 10-day tour of Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, in October to learn about Russian EMS and disaster medicine. Read a first-person account of what the author describes as "the trip of a lifetime for everyone."
Four in Five Medics Injured on the Job, Says NAEMT Survey
Four in five medics have experienced some kind of injury or medical condition as a result of their work, according to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) "Experiences with Emergency Medical Services Survey," conducted by Harris Interactive.
Prehospital Care Slated for Sweeping Change in the United Kingdom
While emergency responders in the United States debate about where to place a consolidated federal EMS office, our ally across the pond has endorsed a series of recommendations poised to bring sweeping change to the health care provided by the National Health Service. In June 2005, the United Kingdom's Department of Health endorsed Taking Healthcare to the Patient: Transforming NHS Ambulance Services, a strategic review of prehospital and out-of-hospital care.

EMS Digest: Just Proud to Be a Paramedic
Patty Dukes is the first female chief of an EMS department for a major metropolitan area in the nation, and of any public safety agency in Hawaii. Early Analysis Suggests Annual Traffic Fatalities Less in 2004 Than in 2003
Preliminary analysis suggests an overall reduction in fatal traffic accidents in 2004 compared with 2003, both in total motorists and non-motorists killed and in fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. Fatalities from alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents appear to have decreased as well.
Paramedics as Good as Physicians in ECG Recognition of STEMI
A study evaluating the ability of urban paramedics to accurately identify ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction on prehospital 12-lead ECGs found that paramedics, as a rule, are pretty good at ECG interpretation. Thus, the need for telemetry of ECG information may not be required if the initial and continued paramedic education programs are adequate.
Is That Snake Poisonous?
All snakes look alike, right? Actually, the lay public is pretty accurate in differentiating poisonous from non-poisonous snake species. Researchers attempted to determine how accurately members of the public could identify venomous snakes and found that there may be no need to capture, kill, or bring a snake to the hospital for identification.
