Can you explain what about this slight slowdown makes work on other perf
tickets "impossible"? That's a concerning claim, but I'll admit I don't
understand why that would be, especially when there's a feature flag to disable
v2 for anyone that wants to do perf-benchmarking on branch_9x. I don't see why
this would "mask" anything, necessarily.
