I have problems with kicker too:

1. The problem at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119947 with the menu.
2. When I switch desktops, the background of kicker gets
repainted with the Window Background colour instead of being transparent. 
That includes the clock which is set to the Plain type.

I'm using the NVidia driver too and this all started happening only with 
kde3.5. The Xorg upgrade, which came later on, didn't fix it. I'm running on 
5.4-RELEASEp8.

I'll file a PR with KDE tonight.
