I remember now that you mentioned removing the battery doesn't generate
events.  This would be an issue with your BIOS.  Check if there is a
update.

In cases where events are not being generated, there is also a poll that
happens every 30 secs to update the power status.  Does lshal|grep 
present show that the battery is not present after 30 secs or more?
