Let's put things in a historical perspective.

People needed "pedigree" information to make a "proper" marriage and to
ensure that property and titles were passed to future generations.

Someone named that "genealogy".

Depending on time and place, the way an inheritance was handled might have
left a spouse who produced no children with nothing - it may have all
stayed "in the family", so having the bloodline was important.

Many of us are interested in where we came from (both bloodlines and
geographic locations), but not all of us track only direct bloodlines -
there are interesting stories about some of my wife's peripheral ancestors
that provide a "where we came from" perspective.

If tracking a female cousin of my wife's grandfather (because I have a
picture of her) or a wonderful child who is a half-sibling to a bloodline
child (the mother married a member of the bloodline; they had a child)
makes me a "family historian" instead of a "genealogist", then I'll just
change my title.

I'm at least as interested in "family" as in bloodline - I side with my
wife's maternal grandfather who referred to me as his "grandson".

Maybe "family history researcher and documentor" is a better title?
