Let's just leave things as they are. Changing the sysyem won't change the 
habits of some of the users.

  Also, if you use gmail your messages are threaded by subject. You can also 
get snippets of the subject. Gmail is free and has an amazing amount of storage 
to save messages, records or whatever.
