Mine seems to be working correctly. In the Family View I have the current husband and wife as the main couple, the parents listed above the main couple and the children listed below the main couple. I have mine set to display 1/2 children in the children list. This displays the 1/2 child with 1/2 in front of the name and the missing parent's name in parenthesis following the child's name. If I move one of the 1/2 children up to the main couple part of the view, then the slots above show the biological parents of that child. Then if I click on the child's parents in the top window the child moves back down to the children area without the half listing and the biological parents are listed in the main couple area. If there is only one child from the two wives then a preferred wife could be set if that was the link preferred, but if there are children from both wives then the correct family (husband/wife combination) has to be selected. If you have 2 or 3 children from different marriages than the only way to select which one shows with biological parents is through the preferred selection.

This is my understanding and if I am wrong, I'm sure we will soon find out. You did not state that the child was listed in the child's slot as 1/2 child so I am making a precarious assumption.

Yes. I think you understand my dilemma/issue. Not to belabor the point, but I don't understand why this isn't an issue for others. I thought exactly the same thing as you have suggested. Consequently, I unlinked the parents and relinked them to the correct ones. Still the same problem. Here is what I see: In family view, the mother shown above is incorrect. I know he is linked to the correct parents because I can hover my mouse over the little "mother/father" icon and the correct parents appear. The mother just doesn't appear above making it look like his mother is someone other than who it actually is.

I think the computer ought to know this because the mother who is shown above (on top) is not connected to him in any way. When I am viewing his "family view" screen, there is no reason for this other woman ("parent") to appear at all. I mark a person as preferred because when I am viewing an individual, that is the preferred SPOUSE. This should not be a factor in seeing one's real PARENT.

I think that whenever I am in family view, I will always have to have the question in my mind of whether I am viewing the actual parents?! I don't remember this being an issue in version 6 or maybe I just didn't notice.

Thanks for all your responses.

Cary,
I want to take one step back here and make sure you added the child to the
correct parents. In Family View, if the child is showing up with your
preferred mother and not the father you want, then the child was entered
with the incorrect couple in the Family View. (correct mother, incorrect
father)
If this is the case, you can unlink the child from parents, go to Family
View, scroll through the spouses until you have the correct biological
mother & father on the screen, then add the child as a 'Link to an
existing' son or daughter.

This may not be the case, but your comment about the parent having nothing
to do at all with the child made me think that just maybe the child was
showing on the Family View as a child of the 'non-preferred' father and not
the biological father.

When I am in family view, the preferred parent shows instead of the
biological parent. How do I get the biological parent to appear and still
keep the "other" parent as preferred?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Simple answer is: You don't! If you want the biological to appear every
time, then that has to be the preferred parent. There is only one preferred
parent, and that is the one that will appear by default. To get the other
one to show, right-click alongside the parents in the Family View - similar
to running forwards or backwards through the siblings by clicking or
right-clicking between the two main individuals on Family
View.

Hi Cary,

That is what "preferred" means - see the Help System, where under
"Preferred, Spouse" it says:

"A Preferred spouse is the spouse automatically shown when their husband or
wife is selected or displayed on the Family or Pedigree View as you
navigate through your ancestors and descendants."

If it is the biological parent that you want to show when you go to their
"spouse" (or former partner or whatever), then set that person to
preferred. It does not indicate who raised the child, or anything else -
it only determines which spouse will be displayed when you navigate to a
particular person.

To scroll through a person's multiple spouses, go to the side of that
person that is nearest the edge of your screen (ie, the left of the husband
or the right of the wife) and click with your left mouse button in the
background area beside that person. Keep clicking to cycle through all
spouses if needed.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

Thanks for the help. The clicking to the left is very helpful.

Is there a way to turn the "preferred" setting off? It is very deceiving to
see someone as a parent when they really had nothing to do with the child
at all. There is no adoption or anything like that. There is no connection
to the child at any time or in any place. The "preferred" spouse merely
married
the father.
Thanks again!
