These are great questions. I knew I wasn't being clear in my original plea, but
I really was (and still am) in a panic about this. Of all the things on my
computer (and they are legion), this program is the most important. I always
back up to a zip file as well, so I feel fairly confident my data is safe. Now
to answer your questions as best I can:

Yes, I have opened the program many times on the current computer. I have only
tried through the desktop shortcut, EXCEPT, both times last night, after I
tried reinstalling, I opened it directly from the executable that my computer
gives me at the conclusion of the download process.
(See later paragraph, as I did try your other suggestions after typing this
paragraph.)

What happens is this: no matter the method tried, when I try to open the
program, it looks like the program is starting. Then there is a dimmed-out
screen behind the error message. In the dimmed-out view, the top menu ribbon is
there (the one that has Back Fwd, Name List, etc.) Below that, though is
something that looks strange. On a tiny bar it has the name of my file, and
then below that, little square boxes that are empty, a little rectangular box
that says 0 blocked, and a box that says Options and Go. (Those things are all
dimmed out, behind the error message, and not accessible.) I have forgotten the
rules on this list, but if you tell me it is allowed or how to do it, I did
take a screen shot of the screen that appears when I try to open the program.

The error message: (It appears to me to be a Windows error message, rather than
a Legacy error.)

Legacy Genealogy Software for Windows has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program
[Then the only option is to click the button that is part of the message that
says...]
Close the program

I have now tried accessing the program through both of the alternative methods
you suggested. Same thing happens each time.

I have to be gone this morning, but unless I get "the call" about my mother, I
will try these things in your second paragraph, this afternoon. I know what you
are saying except that I don't know what is in the .usr files, so it will be
hard for me to know whether I want to keep them or not. Also, when you say that
the .usr files can be found in Help and Search for those files, are you talking
about searching through the Windows search bar? Or where do I find the Help you
are talking about--if it's within the program, I can't get to Help or anything
else.

Thank you.
Barbara
