Would this small patch be of interest ? It is usually good to
avoid a pre-traversal of data structures just to find out how many there
are.
It would probably break binary compatibility with older versions, though.

Whoops, I keep forgetting that it's not OO(the functions can't be part of a
constructor, and there's no constructor).
This time the code should work(I've even tried to compile it, and I did not
get any syntax errors).

Are you sure this works ? This is a C struct, no object method - I don't
get how numMeshes gets written, then ?
