Hi all,
I would like to know what kind of disk performance are people
getting with the latest and (supposedly) greatest udma-33 and udma-66
drives?
I recently purchased an intel i810 based machine with P-II
@400MHz and 64MB RAM, with a seagate u8 38410A drive. Both the mobo+drive
are udma-66 capable.
I have tried this thing with the special 80 core cable (that is
needed for udma-66) and kernel 2.2.12 and 2.2.14 (with andre hendrick's
patches for udma).
But I just don't manage to get anything *decent*, as measured
with hdparm -t -T /dev/hd?. I keep on getting 8 MB/s as the best case.
This is after I have turned on 32 bit i/o, dma, multisector readahead,
with both hdparm v3.5 (that comes with RH6.1) and hdparm 3.6 - the latest
version from mark lord's page.
Now the interesting part is in this month's pcq they have reviewed
this same drive Seagate U8 and they claim that they get 24MB/s under M$.
Does anyone else have any other data points, experiences with any
other drives? I also tried out a samsung 4.3GB drive, and in spite of
being just a udma-33 drive, it gives me a respectable 15MB/s.
I have crosschecked this with kernel compilation as another
benchmark. When I compile a kernel on U8, it takes 6:20 min. On samsung it
takes 5:10 min.
I would like to hear experiences if any that any people on this
list may have to share.

PS - I also have did this in my office on a Micron P-III box @500MHz,
128MB RAM and Promise Technologies udma-66 controller card. After patching
the kernel, and upgrading hdparm, I have managed to get 19.5 MB/s on this
box. BTW the hdd on this machine is a WD cavier 13GB disk.
