Somewhat, but it is still not perfect. Note the spurious data sent together
with ATZ and the immediate "NO CARRIER":

Why does it fail with "NO CARRIER"? I get exactly the same result if I
try minicom. Dialling out with "ATD+4722150689;" works, but of course
gives me a speech connection instead of modem.
I am using Linux-2.3.13-irda1 and a Nokia 8810. The phone works fine
when I use it to connect to the net with a Psion5, so the data service
*is* enabled.

Yup. No hangs anymore.
