Ok, np. :)

I actually had pretty stable IrCOMM a while, about a week or so. Then I fu:d
something in my laptop, now I can't get irattach to work. But that's another
story, Linux/IrDA will probably work if/when I fix the hw settings.

I loaded appropriate modules (irda, irtty, ircomm, ircomm_tty) and then fired
up irmanager -d 1 which in turn started irattach (as per /etc/irda/drivers.)
Then I chose 'Activate IR communication' (Menu 10 in the 8810) and put the
phone in front of my laptop. Discovery worked fine.
(However it seemed that I didn't get any further unless I actually _verified_
the discovery (via cat /proc/irda/devices) - but that's probably just me.)
After discovery I could repeatedly start/exit minicom w/o any problems.
Communication worked immediately. As did it with pppd/chat. I connected to
the net and ran ssh and all sorts of stuff w/o any problems.
Hangup, closing the port, reopening it and redialing worked as well, I didn't
stress test this but it worked four times for me.

If the Ir comm. was interrupted by something (out of range etc.) for too long
I had to unload all drivers and kill off irmanager and then load them all
again. However a shorter interrupt could be survived, one time someone picked
up the phone to look at it while I was online, when I put it back the
connection was still working. I didn't send or recieve anything while the
phone was away though. After having loaded/unloaded drivers a couple of times
some Ir code (don't remember if it was only IrCOMM or all IrDA) started
spewing gobs of debug info onto my console (and sometimes into messages.) :)

But generally, it was working very good.
