Hi Chris:
A bit of background regarding file naming conventions first. Win95 uses
the dos 8.3 file naming convention (unless it has "longfilenames"
installed). ALL dos diskettes use FAT, therefore are 8.3 filesnames. When
you d/l'd the file it was probably saved and definately transferred on
floppy with the 8.3 filename. Say you have a file "tom-1.2-3_i386.rpm",
this file will probably be stored and transferred as "tom_1_2_.rpm" or some
such. NT is not quite this bad but still makes some changes. Not sure
about Win98. Now, that is probably not the filename you used when you
tried to fun rpm on it, therefore it did not find the file.
When you copy the floppy to linux, (or over network, etc) rename it to the
correct linux filename. Hopefully that will take care of not finding the
file problem. Also, since linux is case sensitive, be sure to use 'i' and
not 'I' when running rpm. It is a bit confusing to have 'i' and 'U' for
install and update, why not have them consistent?
Hope this helps,
Tom
