Mary's reply to Jan is a great illustration of how districts seem to
adopt, and then misuse, the various programs associated with literacy
instruction and assessment. DIBELS, (which I looked up and read more
about after my previous post) was developed for assessing decoding
ability in early readers, but will be used as a 'universal screener' and
then 3 times a year, in a middle school!

DIBELS is an assessment of a child's decoding ability. It was used by
our
Reading First coaches and teachers with kids from first to third grades,
but
not beyond that. It wouldn't have anything to do with writer's workshop,
outside of helping teachers select mentor text for kids that they could
read
independently.
