    Yeah, I'd do a couple of things:

    1. Each remote office should have a local X server. All the traffic about opening
windows, changing colors and all that should be limited to the local 100-base-T area.

    2. Make a strategic hookup with AT&T and/or a national cable company.  64K is
skimpy. But you can tunnel each office to 192.168.*.0 networks, then join these
networks with vtun. I've used this; it's not a big performance hit, it's solid and
stable, and it'll let you address your entire network through one class-b network.

    If you run apps across the wire (and they're not just a telnet session) DON'T USE
SSH over the pipe. The pipe will do the compression and whatever level of encryption
you need.

    You can still use ssh, but make sure the compression and encryption turned off;
this a configuration issue, but it can be done. Doing so means you can turn a
"icon-click, password" connection into just an icon-click, with a password entered
once when the user logs in. It's very simple for the users, and still no nightmare
for the admin. And, it's really secure.

    All my contact info is at the bottom; if you're curious, drop me a line.
