The original purpose of leaving out the extension (making the file work
with both pdflatex and latex) is not valid anymore, since we have a
separate export format for pdflatex that does also take other
differences into account.
Unless somebody complains I will make the graphics inset unconditionally
output the extension soon.
I don't have any objections, but I am worried it is a big change, and that
it'll bugs? So I think it deserves some attention/discussion first, or am
I wrong?
