Yeah, I've never seen a particularly compelling reason to purchase
from the US -- local prices are often competitive.

As for shipping: If you ship with USPS (United States Postal Service)
GROUND you will not be hit with an exorbitant brokerage fee.

As you mentioned, the brokerage fee is $5 for collecting the taxes you
owe on your purchase (and, if one is the dishonest type who tries to
avoid taxes, I hope one also don't send his or her kids to publicly
funded schools, drive on roads, makes use of the medical facilities,
votes, runs a business or do other things which rely on conditions
created and supported by public funds).

PS If you ship with a courier service (including USPS Air) make sure
that your courier service INCLUDES the brokerage fee. If not, that's
when you'll get hit with the exorbitant "handling" fees.
