Not free, but I'd suggest 'Data Rescue Classic'.
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/14650
or
http://www.prosoftengineering.com/products/data_rescue.php
They "do offer a free trial version of Data Rescue. This will tell
you if Data Rescue can recognize the drive you want to scan. At the
end of the scan all files Data Rescue found will be displayed to you.
The demo will allow you to recover one file so you can make sure the
file is readable and not corrupted. If your happy with the results
you can purchase Data Rescue to recover the rest of the files."
You'll need a separate drive to 'rescue to'.
