It's frustrating to have a SE/30 suffering from "Simasimac"
and to know that if you ask for spare parts for it, most of
the people who reply live in America, where the international
postage costs make it impractical for them to send you a
whole new logic board which they were otherwise prepared to
send to you for free. Ebay seems to be my only source of
fixables, and buying something on there that is "for spares
only: caveat emptor" requires even more optimism than asking
for help on the Compact Macs list.

Not when it comes to the cheap exchange by snail mail of
any piece of hardware larger than a programmers' switch.

Of course, that's the nice thing about the universal power
supply that went into every mac from the SE onwards (with
the possible exception of some LC models?) A 110 volt Mac
Plus power/sweep board is wired up differently from a 230
volt one: if you're lucky, you can solder in a wire that
allows you to use the second pair of high-voltage capacitors
for 240V operation; if not, the second pair of capacitors
aren't even on the board.

One thing I've been meaning to do for quite some time is to
create a new usenet group, comp.sys.mac.hardware.classic-68k
(or whatever you want to call it). I should be able to use
the relatively large size of the Compact, Vintage and Quadra
lists to provide evidence that it is a popular enough subject
to be worth forcing through.

But what I'd like to know is, with the group uk.comp.sys.mac
catering for the needs of UK mac users (with emphasis on the
G3, G4 and above), why do people continue to use this mailing
list? Is the advantage of idiot control (no spammers, address
harvesters or cross-platform flame wars) more inportant than
the opportunity to get out there and provide help to new Mac
users in a forum that is much easier to find?
