My Mac mini sure feels 'low end' compared to a G5!

I've used a G5 Dual 2GHz on a 26" display in the Apple Store, then came home to my 800MHz iMac G4. I know how you feel :o)

I don't know why though... I think it has a lot to do with running a 1280x1024 display off a slow-ish graphics chip with only 32MB of RAM, because the 1.25GHz 15" AlBook often feels faster despite a 330MHz speed defecit vs my overclocked mini... Which is one of the reasons my master plan is to get hold of a Digital Audio or Quicksilver logic board, a fast dual CPU upgrade, put it into my already adapted ATX case (where my B&W currently lives - I'm sure it wouldn't mind being returned to it's own case) and flash my 'spare' AGP GeForce 6800 Ultra (I've since moved to PCIe on the PCs and can't bare to part with a 10 month old graphics card that cost £300!)

I have to admit that the oldest Mac I own today isn't even a Mac, it's a PowerCenter Pro 240 and my first was a Performa 630 in '95... Before that, I had Amigas!

Whatever made you give up Amigas???

Photoshop! Well, actually, The fact that the Amiga (My last one was an A1200) was basically a dead end system - it was in fact upgraded to a 33MHz '040 and 32MB of RAM, which was much faster than the 680EC040 in the 630 at 20MHz w/20MB of RAM (Though I did swap it for a full '040 later on) but none of the good commercial software houses supported the platform anymore.

Actualy, the Performa 630 was one of the worst computer purchases I've made! PowerPC Macs became commonplace within a few months and there was no software being released for it after 18. I should have just kept the Amiga. The PowerMac 5400/225 I eventually replaced it with was a much better machine, although the built in monitor was always a limitation.
