There is certainly a cost for casual users wishing to switch
identities. Both for wannabe trolls & spammers and people that would
have preferred  (or for which it would have been wiser) not to use
their main identity for $community.¹ Having them provide their "real"
phone number means they are easier to block, as well as easier to track
and by whatever corporation is going to mint it to... ehm "provide a
more customized experience to you" (even though that might be
undesirable for the user privacy).

I wonder however if that's still the case for "professional" spammers,
as I expect they would be able to buy phone numbers more easily and
cheap than common users. Is it really a hurdle for them or just a minor
annoyance?



¹ I'm not even getting started with people giving a different piece to
each company the need to register on, which is certainly the more
secure approach.
