This has always been a democratic issue (small "d") and socialists were
making an issue of it from their first step into national campaigns.

The Democratic party has had ample opportunities to get rid of it since its
founding in the 1820s. The last time this came up seriously was in the
1970s with Tricky Dicky one of those leading the charge.

It didn't happen. Like not locking Rowe v Wade into place legislatively, it
didn't happen for a reason. It is one of the eighteenth century
Constitutional features designed to keep power from reflecting the will of
the people. It was the bulwark of national authority for the slaveholders
and merchant princes. It's not an ornamental antique like the British
monarchy but an ongoing mechanism of power, so it's even less likely to be
abolished.

It is far more likely that the'd find some way of modifying are ways around
it, like a concerted effort at the state level to change how votes get
represented in the Electoral College. Of course, that's not abolishing the
damned thing.
