Whatever the revisionist sins of Khruschev and Deng, this doesn’t explain why 
the masses did not rise up to defend the system they associated with Stalin and 
Mao. Instead in each case they welcomed the turn away from that system to 
domestic and foreign markets and private capital. The initial result was a 
disasterous depression in the fSU and a growth explosion in the PRC which 
improved the living standards of tens of millions.

Charlie does not realize it, but his focus on the “crisis of leadership” in 
both the USSR and China  corresponds to the Trotskyist explanation of why the 
working classes in the West as well as in China and the fSU have not long since 
overthrown their reformist “misleaders” and taken power in their own name.
