But why stop there? From the 1970s onward, Herbert Marcuse became the chief
bogeyman of the far right, culminating in the conspiracy theory of " Cultural
Marxism ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Marxism_conspiracy_theory ) "
"Political Correctness" and "Woke Ideology." I must preface my coverage of this
episode with the disclaimer that I am no Marcuse apologist. Following the Oslo
terrorist mass murder by Anders Breivik in July of 2011, I began an inquiry
into the "Cultural Marxism" conspiracy theory that Breivik cited in his
manifesto as motivation for his crimes. The first thing I discoverd is that
Breivik had plagiarized extensively in his "manifesto" from William S. Lind's
“Political Correctness:” A Short History of an Ideology. The Wikipedia article
on the Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Marxism_conspiracy_theory ) is actually
quite good. My posts on "cultural marxism" go much deeper into the history and
ideology. I am not going to summarize them here other than to reiterate that
Herbert Marcuse served as the chief bogeyman for the far right going back to
the late 1960s and Eliseo Vivas's focus on Marcuse as prime enemy of
civilization. From many posts over a decade, I will just mention two, Deep
Structures of the Cultural Marxism Myt (
https://econospeak.blogspot.com/2017/08/deep-structures-of-cultural-marxism-myth.html
 ) h and Unreading Marcuse's "Repressive Tolerance." (
https://econospeak.blogspot.com/2019/04/unreading-marcuses-repressive-tolerance.html
) I guess I could summarize my thesis as that what we see in MAGA and Trumpism
is a sort of motivated misreading and inversion of Marcuse's critique of
repressive tolerance. There are many posts in which I develop this theme but I
don't have the time right now to catalog them. I may do if there is interest.
