The two party voting system is a representative structure in a constitutional republic. There is no democracy in America and the failure of international policies of democracy promotion during Clinton and Bush Era and Democracy Assistance during the Obama era demonstrates that the facade of democratic liberalism may be finally broken; good riddance. Since the failure of the left to support the people of Aleppo against the Assad regime the question of a more or less progressive party is moot. What we are experiencing is what political science calls realignment. The alienation of the radical left and the centrism of Obama lead to a swing towards popularism that had nowhere to go except further right. The Trump era is an expression of this mass disaffection. Bonapartist is slightly more accurate than fascist but let’s not forget America is a constitutional republic where the executive is the weakest branch. The strengthening of executive power is a direct consequence of the erosion of congressional power and the activism of an unchecked judiciary. When the system of checks and balances erodes the vacuum leads to an authoritarian executive and the same kind of transformation occurred under Regan and Bush. Apathy on the part of the so called socialist can be traced to the failure of the Democratic Party, the belief that a swing right will ignite mass disaffection, and a weakness in leftist organization brought on by the collapse of trade unionism.
