Netatalk uses a non standard port for appleshare, some linux distros will block this port by default once routing is made active, check this if you have installed netatalk and it doesn't work after reading everything plus your best efforts.

Netatalk uses the standard port for AppleTalk over TCP/IP, it just isn't a port number that the automated firewall scripts take into account. I want to make sure it didn't sound like netatalk was doing something non-standard, because it does adhere to networking standards.

Best? Yellow dog has all the eye candy a mac user would be used to, I prefer Mandrake which is a little harder to install but worth the effort without getting to deep. Debain or Suse and we start getting a bit geeky for a newish user.

And for a really rough experience, there is a PPC version of Fedora. Not that Fedora is in some way bad, but the PPC version is missing things like, um, an installer ;) I am commiting pretty heavily to Fedora Core, migrating all our x86 servers to Fedora Core, and starting a deployment of ~10 Fedora Core desktops for our sales/CSR staff.

The last 3 of these are pc/mac distros which is another reason I prefer MDK to YDL

YDL is based on RedHat, I use the same source RPMS for updates to all our servers, x86 or PPC. Except for the kernel SRPMS, of course.
It sounds like the standard 2.6 kernel compiles and is usable for PPC without patches now, so I might be able to use the same kernel RPMS across platforms.
