When it first came out the only lower layer protocol available was LocalTalk and Apple referred to it and the upper level protocol as "AppleTalk".

Then why were the two differientated so clearly in InsideMac? And why did Apple sell "LocalTalk Connector Kits (for AppleTalk Networks)" from day 1? Those were the thing to buy, until the PhoneNet kits came out, which were a bazillion quatloos cheaper.

MacIP tunnels AppleTalk through TCP/IP networks.

Other way around. Mac IP runs IP through an AppleTalk network.

I seem to remember them both being called just Appletalk at first, but maybe the real confusion was amongst the common people and not from Apple? Maybe InsideMac was revised?

I think Appletalk over IP was IPtalk, and I am pretty sure either or both the Cayman and Shiva boxes could do it. Its one of those things on my long list of things to play with. Snooping on the net I also see AURP mentioned a lot, Appletalk Updated Router Protocol.
