Netatalk uses the standard port for AppleTalk over TCP/IP, it just isn't a port number that the automated firewall scripts take into account. I want to make sure it didn't sound like netatalk was doing something non-standard, because it does adhere to networking standards.
Hmm, for a mac udp/tcp 548 is a standard port for appletalk, for the other 95% of the computer firewalls its non standard. I realize Angus is running RH7.2 and have no idea how shorewall is configured or if its even installed by default when using a lintel box as a router.
My last MDK config required several entries to allow basic file sharing services just accross the lan. Rather frustrating as I tend to look elsewhere for the problem.
548 is the port used by APPLESHARE, the file server protocol. APPLETALK is a separate Network protocol and doesn't normally run on IP. AppleShare can run over AppleTalk or IP.
