When it first came out the only lower layer protocol available

Then why were the two differientated so clearly in InsideMac?
And why did Apple sell "LocalTalk Connector Kits (for AppleTalk
Networks)" from day 1? Those were the thing to buy, until the
PhoneNet kits came out, which were a bazillion quatloos cheaper.

MacIP tunnels AppleTalk through TCP/IP networks.

Other way around. Mac IP runs IP through an AppleTalk network.

I seem to remember them both being called just Appletalk at first, but maybe the real confusion was amongst the common people and not from Apple? Maybe InsideMac was revised?

I think Appletalk over IP was IPtalk, and I am pretty sure either
or both the Cayman and Shiva boxes could do it. Its one of those
things on my long list of things to play with. Snooping on the net
I also see AURP mentioned a lot, Appletalk Updated Router Protocol.

Well we have proved the various uses of appletalk, now seeing its a nix forum and we are talking linux so netATALK is the subject lets have a word from our sponser ----

Netatalk is a package that lets a Unix machine supply Appletalk
print and file services on a LAN. The package supports AppleShare
IP and classic Appletalk protocols. With netatalk, Macintosh
computers can mount Unix volumes and print to Unix print spools as
if they were standard Appletalk network devices.

Now, I read *appletalk* and in the context of this forum I believe the term to be appletalk and so it shall be. There is really no need to split hairs on the delivery unless we go back to the classic mac os.
tpc can be encapulated within appletalk, ie: IPNR

Later.
