Steven,
This job is a little more involved than just removing a couple of bolts.
This is an abridged version with the main points left in, may I suggest you
read the suspension unit section of a workshop manual.
I'll presume you don't have spring clips to maintain the spring in the
compressed position. If you do have the procedure is a bit different (refer
510 Workshop manual - suspension unit).
You'll need two jacks, one for the body and a small hydraulic, or with body
stands you can do both sides at once.
Raise the body.
Remove the wheel(s)
Remove the hydraulic brake line either at the calliper or normally easier
with a hydraulic spanner disconnect the flex to solid union.
Disconnect the radius rod (t/c rod, what was the sob term - caster rod) from
the lower control arm
Disconnect the stabiliser rod from the lower control arm
Remove the two bolts at the bottom of the strut retaining the steering arm
(from under the ball joint.)
Undo the 3 bolts at the top of the strut from under the bonnet, leave the
nuts on at least the thickness of the nuts.
Place a small piece of wood under the hub to stop it spinning and with the
hydraulic jack, compress the strut from the bottom and lift ii out of the
lower control arm at the ball joint.
Undo the 3 bolts at the top of the strut unit and remove it from the body.
To remove the spring
Fit spring compressor and undo the retaining nut in the centre of the
mounting insulator. You will need a screw driver or a bar to stabilize the
insulator during removal and re-assembly.
Assembly is much the reverse of removal, but i guarantee you'll learn a few
things (especially new words) along the way.
regards
Terry
