You will need to use the pitman arm from your car. I think they were different between all models and not all 1600s are the same either. If you are checking the box out of the car you need to wind the box to the middle and hold the input and output shafts and see if there is any play. With no steering wheel or steering linkages the movement should be almost non existent. If you can feel it easily then it is stuffed. And yes the only steering boxes that are a bolt in for the 1600 are 1600, 180B and 120Y. I didn't check the 6 cyl nissans though.

Hi and thanks for all of the replies, it looks like i'll be trying to find a second hand box rather than paying $280 dollars for a reco one! From what you've said i can get either a 1600 or 180B box and they will bolt straight in, or a 120Y box and my 1600 pitman arm, right? If a steering box is no longer in a donor car what should i look for to tell if it's going to have the same sloppiness as my original box? Or does it have to be inside the car so that you can actually try it out with the steering wheel?
Any advice would be great as i really need to get this fixed before i run off the road! Thanks, Mark
