Terry,
They have about 42 ft/lb new stock and settle down to about 35 ft/lb when
worn in.
They will break away if you have heaps of torque available during
acceleration. They are designed to have some slip to allow you to turn in
easier in a corner without the dreaded solid axle understeer.
Detroit lockers operate on a spring and dog clutch principle so they lock
both axles under power and release when you back off. Hence the famous
locker clunk!

If you let your diff go bang it will cost a lot more to fix (if it is
fixable) as the thing that goes bang is usually the hemispheres breaking.
I have my diffs upgraded to 65-70 ft/lb breakaway torque so the settle down
to about 55-60 ft/lb. This means an extra clutch plate and spring assembly
but is worth while doing as they really do work, but still have some slip on
the road when turning into a corner.

Cheers
Feral Errol

Errol,

What spec were they new? I'm just curious as mine had 35 ft/lb breakaway a
couple of years ago when I put it in. I can still break it away though with
the right rev's on. They are a weird diff, well compared to live axle LSD's
that i've had like 9" Detroit lockers in my Fords which are supposed to lock
until 60 ft/lbs and then go LSD but with over 300 hp I could never breakaway
a locker. From the prices quoted to repair it, i've decided to just drive it
until it goes bang and worry about a replacement then.

regards
Terry

Cam,
I have not had a diff that had a good clutch pack in it. They are all 15 to
20 years old now and usually only have 15 ft/lb of torque.
The minimum cost to get them up to spec will be two clutch plates and a
spring plate which cost $228 plus the tear down and rebuild. Typically $400
plus bolt in plugs and machining.
To get a diff with all new plates and spring will cost $600 plus the rebuild
and any machining of the hemispheres and bolt in plugs for universal joint
shafts. Typically $800.

A new Nismo centre only without crown wheel is approximately $2300 depending
on exchange rate.

Cheers

Good point Errol,

Just on that, what would it be worth to have the clutch pack re-done and can
you do it?

Cheers,
