Isn't there meant to be a diode that stops the current flowing through the light and 
back to ground when the engine is running?

The light shines when there is a voltage difference (obviously), when the ig. is on 
and the alternator is not turning (12v one side ov other side)
When the alternator is going there is 14v on both sides of the light and diode so it 
extinguishes.

I'd be guessing that it has blown, or that there is a short somewhere.
Check the wiring diagram to make sure

That's what I thought, but when I pulled the engine last time, I wrote down all the locations of the wires (even with diagrams). This is the third time I've down this engine swap, and it has not done this before. I re-checked the wiring, and everything seems fine.
 
I have also have a volt gauge in the car, and it reads 14v at idle. I really don't know what's going on?
