Mark,
This
is a stock DR30-RSX (FJ20) alternator and it requires an inline diode to be
fitted to the Field wire ( | ) to stop the charge light glowing when the battery
is fully charged. The diode req'd is an IN4004 or IN4007 and they're available
from Dick Smith etc. A diode only allows power to pass thru it one way and
to check it you connect the diode (temporarily) and if the charge light
comes on with the ignition it's in the line the right way
round.
On the
DR30 the diode is fitted to the dash loom and so when you use this alternator
with a 1600 it's missing. Not having the diode doesn't seem to hurt the
alternator and you can pull the charge light and just rely on a Amps or
Battery gauge but if you want to use a charge light it's glow on full
battery is a pesky little quirk. You'll find that if you discharge the battery
(light on for 5 minutes) the glowing should stop. If it doesn't then usually the
reg is on it's way out or the brushes are full of crud and are leaking across
the armature.
regards
Terry
