Mark,

This is a stock DR30-RSX (FJ20) alternator and it requires an inline diode to be fitted to the Field wire ( | ) to stop the charge light glowing when the battery is fully charged. The diode req'd is an IN4004 or IN4007 and they're available from Dick Smith etc. A diode only allows power to pass thru it one way and to check it you connect the diode (temporarily) and if the charge light comes on with the ignition it's in the line the right way round.

On the DR30 the diode is fitted to the dash loom and so when you use this alternator with a 1600 it's missing. Not having the diode doesn't seem to hurt the alternator and you can pull the charge light and just rely on a Amps or Battery gauge but if you want to use a charge light it's glow on full battery is a pesky little quirk. You'll find that if you discharge the battery (light on for 5 minutes) the glowing should stop. If it doesn't then usually the reg is on it's way out or the brushes are full of crud and are leaking across the armature.

regards
Terry

Terry,

I checked last night and the alternator looks to be an Hitachi with the following markings.

Nissan  23100  R2000
LR160   405 (Not sure about this line)
12V60A  26
IC REG  Built In

Does this make any sense to you?

Mark.

Mark,

Are we talking the Hitachi out of a DR30 Skyline on the FJ. If you are don't despair, I can fix that as long as the alternator is charging. The symptoms are the light only glows when the battery is fully charged and gets brighter as the revs increase. Get back to me if this sounds on the money and I'll dig up the diode details that you have to fit to stop the problem.

regards
Terry

Subject: Charge Light coming on.

Hi guys,

A small problem has a risen since I changed my engine.

When I rev the car, the charge light comes on - What the........?

This is very strange, as before the engine swap, the light would glow a little at idle, but would go out as the rev's increased. This was no problem as the majority of the time the car is well over 4,000 rpm.

Any ideas why it is doing exactly the opposite now?

Mark.
