When ppl say that the S2 motor won't run on unleaded, what exactly do they mean?

My S2 engine runs absolutely fine on regular unleaded, it pings a bit when it is very
hot and pulling hard up a hill in a high gear - but it is better than almost every
other car that I have driven in that respect.
It runs 18 degrees BTDC static timing, twin carbies and is mildly modified.
I have not needed to adjust the valve clearances because of seat wear or anything,
last checked about 6 months ago though!

Of course I use PULP for club motorsport duties.
