hi,  you  should also have a wire  from the bac of alt , going to the
warning light on the dash, otherwise it   wont charge.
that wire  you got going  to earth, is  the other end actually connected to
the housing  of the alt?
if it goes to a  isolated terminal, then i think that some trouble coyuld be
there.
