A breaker bar, is well it's kinda hard to explain, It's a (usually) long bar of metal with a male socket which can slide up and down the bar, It is at a right angle to the bar, Hence you can put alot more force on it,(without fucking your nice rachets!), e.g YOu can put the end of the jack bar so you can get more of a fulrum effect, hence more torque(twisting force) I hope this anwers your question, if not, I'll send you a pic.
